Shipping prices change too often for a static rate chart to stay trustworthy. The durable approach is to measure the packed parcel, compare the live label choices available for that order, and put the actual cost into your profit calculation.
Measure the parcel, not the bare item
Before publishing a listing, choose the packaging and record:
- packed weight;
- outside length, width and height;
- origin and likely destination range;
- declared value and any coverage or signature requirement; and
- packaging-material cost.
Carriers and marketplaces may charge from actual weight, dimensional weight or a service-specific size tier. A light product in an oversized box can therefore cost more than expected. Always round and enter measurements according to the label provider’s rules.
Platform label or your own label?
The cheapest visible quote is not automatically the lowest-risk choice.
| Marketplace | Current workflow to check |
|---|---|
| eBay | eBay Labels offers negotiated carrier rates and uploads tracking automatically. Compare the available services for the packed parcel. |
| Mercari US | A Mercari prepaid label can be buyer- or seller-paid and carries Mercari Shipping Protection when its requirements are met. Ship-on-your-own orders require valid tracking and do not receive that platform protection. |
| Poshmark US | Poshmark supplies a prepaid label; the standard label currently covers orders up to 5 lb, with an upgrade workflow for heavier packages. |
Read the current provider rules before shipping: eBay Labels, Mercari shipping for sellers and Poshmark’s shipping guide.
Platform protection is conditional. Save acceptance scans, use the label only for the order it belongs to, and follow packaging, weight, dimension and handoff deadlines.
A reliable label-comparison workflow
- Pack the item as it will actually ship.
- Weigh and measure the sealed parcel.
- Enter the same origin, destination, dimensions, weight and coverage into each eligible quote.
- Compare total cost, delivery estimate, tracking, included coverage and claim process.
- Buy the correct service and keep the carrier acceptance receipt.
For eBay, compare calculated shipping and any flat-rate choice using the rate the buyer will actually see. For Mercari, confirm whether the buyer pays the label or it is deducted from your proceeds. For Poshmark, upgrade the label before shipment if the packed order exceeds the included weight.
Use the correct packaging
- Choose a sturdy box or mailer sized for the item and its cushioning.
- Remove or fully cover old labels, barcodes and hazardous-material markings on reused boxes.
- Do not use carrier-branded packaging with an incompatible service.
- Immobilize fragile items; protect edges, screens, glass and moving parts.
- Seal every opening and attach one clear, flat shipping label.
- Photograph valuable or fragile items before and after packing.
Free carrier packaging is service-specific, not universally free. Using it with the wrong label can trigger adjustments or returns.
Avoid the most common adjustments
Postage adjustments usually begin with incorrect weight, dimensions, package type or service packaging. Prevent them by keeping a small scale and tape measure at the packing station and updating a listing when the planned box changes.
USPS Media Mail is limited to eligible media and packages can be inspected. Do not select it solely because it is cheaper; confirm eligibility in the current USPS mailing standards.
Buyer-paid versus seller-paid shipping
Buyer-paid shipping keeps the item price visually separate from delivery, but marketplace fees may still apply to the shipping amount. Seller-paid shipping can simplify the offer, but the label remains a real expense.
Whichever model you use, calculate:
Net profit = item price + shipping collected − fees − item cost − label cost − packaging cost
Enter the label under your shipping cost in the relevant marketplace calculator. If the exact destination is unknown, test a nearby, typical and distant zone and price from a cautious estimate.
Before every handoff
- Verify the recipient and return address on the order label.
- Confirm the service matches the packaging.
- Check the packed weight and dimensions one last time.
- Remove old routing and hazardous-material markings.
- Obtain an acceptance scan or receipt.
- Keep photos and tracking until the order is complete.
Live carrier and marketplace quotes should be the source of truth for price. This guide was reviewed on August 9, 2026; provider rules can change after that date.
